William Romaine Callender (junior) (1825 – 1876)     

British businessman and Conservative politician.                  Born 1825                                                                 Died 22 Jan 1876  of "rheumatic neuralgia" at St Leonards-on-Sea, Sussex, aged 51.                                             He was the son of William Romaine Callender of Mauldeth Hall near Manchester and his wife, Hannah Pope of London.                                                                       He entered his father's business as a cotton spinner and merchant in Manchester, eventually taking charge. He expanded the firm by the purchase of that of Sir Thomas Bazley in Bolton- Dean Mill  in 1861.  The company went out of business after his death and the mill was demolished in 1913.

Mayor of Bolton 1871, 1872 (Conservative)                    Master cotton spinner. Brother-in-law of Richard Stockdale, Mayor of Bolton 1864-66. Criticised in Parliament for his negligent conduct during the so-called Dilke Riot in at the Temperance Hall in Bolton on 30 November 1871 where one man lost his life.                                                   Mayor at the opening of Bolton Town Hall by the Prince of Wales on 5 June 1873 and presided over the subsequent banquet and celebrations. Made Freeman of County Borough of Bolton September 6th, 1899.

Andrew Carnegie (1835-1919)                                      Scottish-born American industrialist                                  Born November 25, 1835, Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland. Died August 11, 1919, Lenox, Massachusetts, U.S.

He led the enormous expansion of the American steel industry in the late 19th century. He was also one of the most important philanthropists of his era.                             On September 29, 1910, three new libraries were opened in Bolton, courtesy of the wealthy American industrialist and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. They were situated in Astley Bridge, Great Lever and Halliwell and they were each donated to the town for the specific use of the communities.

Peers Lee Carter(1916-2001)           

Diplomat, Soldier and Linguist                                          Born 5 December 1916 Bolton                                       Died February 2001 Haywards Heath, Sussex.         Educated Radley College, Oxfordshire; Christ Church College, Oxford                                                       Studied modern languages. Taught in Germany before WWII. Joined Consular Service 1939 - vice-consul in Amsterdam during German invasion and organised evacuation of British Subjects. Joined Coldstream Guards then assigned to Intelligence Service.                               Worked with Free French forces in Chad, acted as liaison between Generals Leclerc and Montgomery in North Africa. Later parachuted into Yugoslavia to liase with Tito's partisans. Diplomatic postings to Baghdad, New York, Singapore and Geneva after War.                                   British Ambassador to Afghanistan 1968-1972. Later personal translator for several British Prime Ministers. Founded Afghanistan Support Committee to work to help poverty-stricken villages in Afghanistan.

Stephen Cartwright (1947-2004)                                    Illustrator.                                                                  Born 28 December 1947 Bolton                                     Died 12 February 2004 Tunbridge Wells, Kent                Educated St Martin's College, London; Royal College of Art.                                                                          Prolific illustrator of more than 150 children's books from the mid-1970s until his death.                                              Trademark was to hide at least one Yellow Duck somewhere in each book for children to find.

James Chadwick                                                           James Chadwick & Bros Ltd, cotton manufacturers, Bolton, England was formed in 1893 and was doing business in New York, USA and Montreal, Canada.                         In 1896, J & P Coats, thread manufacturers, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland, amalgamated with  Clark & Co Ltd, thread manufacturers; Paisley, its American associates;  Jonas Brook & Bros Ltd, thread manufacturers, Meltham Mills, Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England; and James Chadwick & Bros Ltd to form the enlarged firm of  J & P Coats Ltd, with a market value of around £22 million, and approximately 25,000 shareholders. Each company maintained its identity with the preservation of the names and trademarks which were used for the particular market with which they were associated. In 1917, The Clark Thread Co, thread manufacturers, Newark, New Jersey, USA, purchased the American business of James Chadwick & Bros Ltd.  United Thread Mills Ltd, thread manufacturers, Glasgow, Scotland, was incorporated in March 1931 and almost immediately entered into agreements with J & P Coats Ltd, Clark & Co Ltd, Jonas Brook & Bros and James Chadwick & Bros for United Thread Mills Ltd to purchase properties from them. The companies continued to operate in their mills, but as a branch of United Thread Mills Ltd. In 2012, James Chadwick & Sons Ltd was still a registered company.

 

Dr Samuel Taylor Chadwick (1809-1876)                        Doctor, Politician and Philanthropist.                                  Born 1809 Newcroft House, Urmston, Lancashire.        

Died 3 May 1876 Peel House, Southport, Lancashire.        University of Edinburgh                                                  Established Eye and Ear Institution on Bradshawgate (Squint Alley) - Conservative councillor 1858-1861.                Gave £22000 for an orphanage in the Haulgh and Model Dwellings for Working Men in Peabody Street - also £5000 for the infirmary and £5000 for a museum in Queen's Park.  Statue of Chadwick erected to left of Town Hall in Victoria Square in 1873 - unusually while he was still alive.

 

Justin Paul Chadwick (1968-)           

Television and Film Director and Actor                               Born December 1968 Manchester, Lancashire.                Educated Ladybridge CP School, Bolton; Turton High School; Leicester Polytechnic.                                           Began career as a character actor in film and TV series such as 'Heartbeat' and 'The Bill' before concentrating on directing.                                                                      Was nominated for a BAFTA award in 2006 for directing the BBC TV adaptation of Charles Dickens' 'Bleak House' which also won the award that year for best drama series. He was also nominated for an Emmy award for directing the same series.                                                              Other TV directing credits include 'Spooks' and 'Byker Grove' while his feature film debut was with 'The Other Boleyn Girl' in 2008.

Specialises in Funk, Jazz, Latin and R&B music.                                                         Touring DJ, manager of Afro-Cuban Percussionist Snowboy, sometime co-owner of Decoy Records in Manchester and fanatical Bolton Wanderers fan.

Born 27 September 1833 Edenfield, Bury, Lancashire         Died 22 December 1909.                                             Manufacturer of safes in Bolton and lived at 14 Wentworth Street, Little Bolton.                                                    Set up foundry at Bark Street and leased Vulcan Foundry in Foundry Street, Bolton.

Died 15 September 1940 Hereford, Herefordshire.      Educated Clarendon Street School, Bolton; Bolton Municipal Secondary School.                                                        Mayor of Bolton 1928.                                                  Cabinet maker and house furnisher. Cheadle Square in Bolton named in his memory in 1947.                          Lived at Overdale, Chorley New Road, Heaton and had a library of over 2000 books.

Humphrey Chetham (1580 -1653)                                  English textile merchant, financier, and philanthropist.          Born on 10 July 1580 in Crumpsall: the son of Henry Chetham – a successful Manchester merchant who lived in Crumpsall Hall – and his wife Jane,                                  He bought Turton Tower in Chapeltown, Bolton, from William Orrell in 1628.

Charles Allen Clarke (1863-1935).                                  Author and Dialect Writer                                          Born 28 February 1863 Parrot Street, Bolton.                  Died 12 December 1935 St Ives Avenue, Blackpool, Lancashire.                                                                  Educated St Matthew's School; Hulton Street School, Bolton. 1891 founded 'The Labour Light' - 1st Labour movement journal in Lancashire - not a success "the masses don't seem to want uplifting" - then established 'The Bolton Trotter' a weekly comic paper. Also wrote as 'Teddy Ashton'. 1896 Teddy Ashton's Journal - weekly then Annual - novel 'The Lass at the Man and Scythe (aka John O' God's Sending)' about English Civil War in Bolton.                                     Sometime Editor of the Blackpool Echo - had an exposure of the half-time system translated into Russian by Tolstoy and published in Russia. Brother of Thomas Clarke qv.
