David Bone Nightingale Jack (1899-1958)                                       Professional Footballer                                                                   Born 3 April 1899 Bolton                                                              Died 10 September 1958 Lambeth, London                                     Inside right - played for Plymouth Argyle, Bolton Wanderers, Arsenal and England.                                                                            Scored first goal in a Wembley FA Cup Final - April 28th, 1923 - 2-0 against West Ham. Later managed Southend and Middlesbrough.        His brother, Robert qv, also played for Bolton Wanderers. They were both originally signed to Plymouth Argyle by their father, Robert Jack - another ex-Bolton Wanderers player - who was manager of the team at the time!

Founding co-editor of "Independent on Sunday"                                                                                      Family moved back to Scotland in 1952.

 

Robert Jack (1902-1994)                                                               Professional Footballer                                                                   Born 1 April 1902 Bolton                                                              Died 1994                                                                                  Played for Plymouth Argyle, Bolton Wanderers, Clapton Orient, Yeovil and Swinton Town.                                                                   His brother, David Jack qv, also played for Bolton Wanderers. They were both originally signed to Plymouth Argyle by their father, Robert Jack - another ex-Bolton Wanderers player - who was manager of the team at the time!

 

Brian Jackson (1931-2022)                                                           Actor and Producer                                                                       Born April 1931 Bolton                                                                Died 2 Jul 2022 London after a long battle with prostate cancer.        Educated Castle Hill School, Bolton; St Columba's RC Junior School, Bolton; Thornleigh Salesian College, Bolton Character actor with many stage, TV and film roles, including 'Dixon of Dock Green', 'Z- Cars', 'The Avengers' etc. Film appearances include 'Revenge of the Pink Panther' and Michael Winner's 1961 nudist epic 'Some Like it Cool'.                Best known for playing the white-suited 'Man From Del Monte' in the successful TV advertising campaign of the 1980s. Runs his own film production company.                                                              Served as a Navy cameraman in the Fleet Air Arm. Was married to early 'Bond girl' actress Eunice Gayson.

 

Rev James 'Steeple' Jackson (1796-1878)                                         Eccentric Clergyman and Climber                                                   Born 1796 Kendal, Westmorland                                                   Died 1 May 1878 Pillar Rock, Cumberland                                Vicar of Rivington 1832-1856 - writer of egotistical verses:                 "Who has not heard of Steeple Jack / That Lion-hearted Saxon / Though I am not he, he was my sire / For I am Steeple Jackson".        Climbed 'The Pillar' in the Lake District at the age of 79 in 1875 - Immediately dubbed himself 'The Patriarch of the Pillar'. Killed on his final attempt aged 82.

 

Sir Geoffrey Holt Seymour Jackson (1915-1987)                             Diplomat                                                                                    Born 4 March 1915 Bolton                                                           Died 1 October 1987 London                                                       Educated Bolton School; Emmanuel College, Cambridge.               Famously kidnapped and held hostage for 8 months by Tupamaros guerrillas in 1971 while ambassador to Uruguay.                               Knighted 16th November 1971.

Francis Arthur Jefferson VC   (1921-1982)                                         Born 18 August 1921   Ulverston                                                    Died 4 September 1982    - after a train hit him only 200 yards from his home in Luton Street, Bolton.                                                        English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. It was awarded for his actions during the Battle of Monte Cassino in World War II.

Eric Johnson (1923-)                                                                     Politician                                                                                     Born 1923 St Helens, Lancashire.                                                    Mayor of Bolton 1996 (Labour), Mayor of Blackrod: 1988-89, 1993-94 (Labour).                                                                               Came to Bolton in 1977 to work at Horwich Loco Works, having worked in Railway Industry since 1936. 'Retired' at closure of Loco Works in 1983.

 

Ethel Johnson (1908 1964)                                                           Athlete                                                                                       Born 8 October 1908 Westhoughton, Bolton.                                  Died 30 March 1964                                                                    One of the first British women athletes to compete in the Olympics. At Los Angeles in 1932, she finished 5th in her heat of the 100 metres in 13.9 seconds. Won Bronze medal in Women's 4x100m Relay.           100 yards record holder.

Casey-Lee Jolleys (1974-)                                                               Actress                                                                                       Born 1974 Billinge, Wigan, Lancashire                                           Educated St Teresa's Primary School, Little Lever                                 Played Stacy Hilton/Orchid Pattaya in 'Coronation Street' and presented teen show 'Milkshake'.  Grew up in Bolton. Owns and runs a dance and drama school in Bolton with comedian Bobby Ball.

 

Alfred Jones (1883-1964)                                                             Politician                                                                                    Born 1883 Farnworth, Bolton                                                    Died 3 February 1964 168 Highfield Road, Farnworth                       Educated St James's School, New Bury                                              Mayor of Farnworth 1941 (Labour), Chairman of Farnworth Urban District Council: 1938-39 (Labour) Iron founder. Worked for 17 years in the grocery department of Farnworth and Kearsley Industrial Co-operative Society. In 1913 he entered the iron foundry business with his father and three brothers.                                                                He was awarded an OBE in 1950 in recognition of public services.

 

Daniel Alan David (Danny) Jones (1986-)                                          Musician                                                                                   Born 12 March 1986 Bolton                                                          Educated Thornleigh Salesian College; Bolton, Bury College.         Guitarist and vocalist with boy band 'McFly'.

 

Emily Grace Jones (2013-2020)                                                      Born 18 January 2013 Bolton, Greater Manchester, England                                                                                   Died 22 March 2020 Salford Royal Hospital, City of Salford, Greater Manchester, England aged 7                                                          A pupil at Markland Hill Primary School in Bolton.                              On 22 March 2020, 7-year-old Emily Grace Jones was stabbed at Queen's Park in Bolton, Greater Manchester, England, while riding her scooter and died shortly afterwards. Eltiona Skana, a 30-year-old Albanian woman unknown to the Jones family, was arrested on the scene and later charged with murder. On 6 November 2020, Skana pled guilty to the lesser included offence of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. After a trial at Minshull Street Crown Court from 26 November to 4 December, the charge of murder was withdrawn by the prosecution and the jury was directed to formally return a not guilty verdict for murder. On 8 December, Skana was given a life sentence, with a minimum term of eight years, for the conviction of manslaughter

Under Secretary for Foreign Affairs 1947 - Joint Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Supply 1947-1950.                      Killed in when the car he was driving crashed into a ravine.
