Norman Forber Kay (1929-2001)                                            Musical Director and Composer of TV Music                             Born 5 January 1929 Bolton                                                  Died 12 May 2001 Surrey                                                     Educated Royal Manchester College of Music; Royal College of Music.                                                                                Prolific composer. Wrote over 500 scores for TV productions including 'Armchair Theatre', 'The Wednesday Play' and 'Doctor Who'. His television opera, 'A Christmas Carol', was awarded the Salzburg Opera Prize in 1980.                                         Studied under Thomas Baron Pitfield qv at Manchester. Awarded a fellowship of the Royal College of Organists at 18. Moved to London in 1950.                                                                  Music critic for the Manchester Guardian and later the Daily Telegraph.

Vernon Charles Kay (1974-)                                                    Broadcaster                                                                        Born 28 April 1974 Bolton                                                     Educated St Joseph's RC High School and Sport College, Horwich                                                                       Prolific TV and Radio presenter, firmly focused on (very) light entertainment.                                                                      Married to TV presenter Tess Daly. Absolutely no relation to Peter Kay qv.                                                                            Received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Bolton for his outstanding contribution to the field of entertainment on 14 July 2009.

Ran the Bradford Arms on Foundry Street, Bolton.

Was fatally injured with an axe at Antelope Court, Bolton on 18 July, 1883, by his brother Peter, who had a serious mental condition.

Peter Kelly (c.1819-1883)

On 18 Jull 1883 Peter Kelly, aged 64, who had been diagnosed  with a serious mental condition , fatally injured his brother Patrick with an axe in Antelope Court, Bolton. Peter then hurled himself from a second floor window and died later in hospital. Patrick died in hospital the following week

Thomas Gilbert Kelly (1865-1934)                                           Politician                                                                          Born 1865 Bolton                                                              Died 6 August 1934 Douglas, Isle of Man.                               Mayor of Douglas, Isle of Man, 1920-22. Of Manx descent but grew up in Bolton and moved to the Isle of Man as a young man.  Publican - ran the Bridge Inn in Douglas and was Secretary of the Isle of Man Licensed Victuallers' Association. Also one of the founders and Secretary of the Isle of Man Football Association and Secretary of the Isle of Man Rugby Union.                           Trade Unionist - founder member of the Douglas branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners.

Britain's most successful Olympian with most  golds (7) and most medals  (9).                                                                  Team Sprint 1st 2008, 2012, 2016 and 2nd 2021.            Individual Sprint 1st 2012, 2016 and 2nd 2008.              Keirin 1st 2016, 2021.                                                       In September 2016, he married the track cyclist Laura Trott.  Taken together they have won 12 Olympic gold medals.

Winifred Kettle (1901-1985)                                                 Politician                                                                            Born 10 August 1901 Burslem, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire    Died 14 February 1985                                                        42 Years as a Labour councillor on Westhoughton Urban District Council, Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council and Lancashire County Council. First woman to sit on Westhoughton UDC.         Awarded OBE in 1974. Made Honorary Alderman in 1980.       A community care centre in Westhoughton is named in her memory.

Haroon Iqbal "Harry" Khan (1991-)                                           Pakistan-British professional boxer                                            Born 10 May 1991 Bolton, England                                        Commonwealth Games Bronze medallist 2010 New Delhi.        Khan chose to represent Pakistan after being overlooked by the Team GB selectors in favour of Andrew Selby, who he went on to beat in the quarter finals, and was thus guaranteed a medal before losing out to the eventual gold medalist, Indian boxer Suranjoy Singh.                                                          Unbeaten as a professional 7 wins in seven fights.

Eddie Kidd (1959-)                                                               World champion motor-cycle stunt rider                                    He did a show in Queen's Park, Bolton in 1979.                       CCM Motorcycles once supplied stunt performer Eddie Kidd with a specially modified CCM 500cc  used to jump over 13 double decker buses in 1976.

Johnny Kidd (1935-1966)                                                      English singer-songwriter                                                    Born 23 December 1935   Frederick Albert Heath                      Died 8 October 1966.                                                          Best remembered as the lead vocalist for the rock and roll band Johnny Kidd & the Pirates. He was one of the few pre-Beatles British rockers to achieve worldwide fame, mainly for his 1960 hit, "Shakin' All Over".                                                            Kidd died at age 30, in a motor car collision on the A58, Bury and Bolton Road, Bury Bolton border, Radcliffe, Lancashire. The car in which he was travelling as a passenger had a head-on collision with one driven by Peter Metcalfe. Metcalfe's 17-year-old girlfriend, Helen Read, also died in the accident. Pirates' bassist Nick Simper, who later became an original member of Deep Purple, was also in the car with Kidd, but he suffered only some cuts and a broken arm.

Played cricket for Heaton in the Bolton and District League.

Father changed family name to Kroto from Krotoschiner in 1955.
